What Is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight or DIM weight) is a pricing method used by couriers to charge for the space a package occupies in a delivery vehicle, not just its actual physical weight.

If you ship a large box filled with lightweight foam, the box takes up as much space in the delivery truck as a box filled with heavy books. Couriers charge based on which is higher — the actual weight or the space-weight (volumetric). This is why a big but light package often costs more than a small but heavy one.

The Volumetric Weight Formula

For international shipments, the standard formula is:

Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 5000

Then the courier compares:

The higher of the two is what you pay for. That number is called the chargeable weight.

Why Do Couriers Use Volumetric Weight?

Couriers have limited space in their aircraft and trucks. A shipment of 10 large pillows might weigh only 20 kg but consume the space of 200 kg of books. To stay profitable, couriers charge by the space consumed — not just the weight.

Airlines first introduced dimensional weight in the 1980s for cargo. Couriers adopted it for parcels in the 1990s and today it is standard across DHL, FedEx, UPS, USPS, and Pakistan Post.

A smaller divisor means a higher volumetric weight. So a divisor of 5000 is more expensive than a divisor of 6000 for the same box.

How to Reduce Volumetric Weight

Reducing volumetric weight is the single easiest way to cut shipping costs. Here is how:

1. Right-Size Your Box

Never use an oversized box. If your item fits in a 30×20×15 box, don’t use a 40×30×20. The smaller box might save you 40%.

2. Remove Empty Space

Use void fill (bubble wrap, air pillows, packing paper) — not to add weight, but to reduce the usable volume. This doesn’t reduce the box size, but it can allow you to use a smaller outer box.

3. Compress Soft Items

Clothing, bedding, and plush toys can be vacuum-sealed or compressed to fit in far smaller boxes. This is huge for anyone shipping personal items to Pakistan or India.

4. Ship Multi-Item Orders in One Box

Three separate small boxes might each have volumetric weight of 2 kg (total 6 kg). One combined box might have volumetric weight of 4 kg. Savings: 33%.

5. Choose a Courier With a Higher Divisor

Pakistan Post uses a 6000 divisor for some services, meaning your volumetric weight is lower than with DHL. On light, bulky items, Pakistan Post can be dramatically cheaper.

6. Use Poly Mailers Instead of Boxes

For non-fragile items like clothes or documents, poly mailers eliminate the volumetric weight issue almost entirely — the parcel adapts to the item’s shape.
