What Are HS Codes?

HS codes (Harmonized System codes) are a standardized numerical classification system for traded products, developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO). Nearly every country in the world uses HS codes to classify imports and exports.

The HS system covers over 5,000 product categories and is updated every 5 years. The current version is HS 2022.

How HS Codes Are Structured

An HS code is typically 6-10 digits, arranged in a hierarchy:

DigitsMeaningExample (Laptop)
First 2Chapter84 — Machinery and mechanical appliances
Next 2Heading8471 — Automatic data processing machines
Next 2Subheading8471.30 — Portable digital computers <10 kg
Extended digitsCountry-specific tariff8471.30.0100 (USA) / 8471.30.0000 (EU)

The first 6 digits are standardized globally. Beyond that, each country adds its own digits.

How to Find the Right HS Code

There are four ways to find your HS code:

1. Free WCO HS Database

The World Customs Organization maintains an online HS database. Search by product keyword.

2. Your Country’s Customs Website

3. Ask Your Supplier

If you’re importing, your supplier or manufacturer usually knows the correct HS code.

4. Hire a Customs Broker

For complex products or high-value shipments, a licensed customs broker can classify correctly for a small fee ($50-200).

How HS Codes Determine Duty

Your HS code determines your duty rate. Two similar products can have very different duties:

ProductHS CodeTypical US Duty
Laptop computer8471.300%
Smartphone8517.120%
Cotton t-shirt6109.1016.5%
Leather handbag4202.219%
Running shoes6404.1120%
Instant coffee2101.110%
Vitamin supplements2106.906.4%

The right HS code can save hundreds of dollars on a single commercial shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an HS code for personal shipments?

Yes, if you ship internationally. Even personal gifts need a basic HS code for customs declaration. For low-value personal shipments, a broad code is often accepted.

How many digits should my HS code have?

The first 6 digits are globally standardized. Your destination country may require 8-10 digits. Always use the full code required by your destination country’s customs authority.

What happens if I use the wrong HS code?

You may pay too much duty, or too little. If too little, customs will demand the difference plus a penalty. Repeat offenses can result in seizure and legal action.

Can I use the same HS code for similar products?

No. Even small differences (material, function, packaging) can change the HS code and duty rate. Always classify each product precisely.

Are HS codes the same worldwide?

The first 6 digits are standardized globally. Beyond 6 digits, each country has its own extensions. Always check your destination country’s tariff schedule.

How often do HS codes change?

The WCO updates HS codes every 5 years. The most recent update was HS 2022. The next is expected in 2027.
